Amber and Silver Alerts in North Carolina

October 30, 2009 - RALEIGH - The Amber and Silver Alerts you sometimes see on TV are a valuable tool in finding missing persons.

Amber alerts are for those 17 years old or younger, believed to have been abducted, not taken by a parent (unless the child is in danger), not believed to be a runaway or voluntarily missing, and the abduction has been reported to and investigated by a law enforcement agency.

A Silver Alert is issued when the person is believed to be suffering from dementia or other cognitive impairment- regardless of age, is believed to be missing – regardless of circumstance, a legal custodian of the missing person has submitted a missing person’s report to the local law enforcement agency where the person went missing, and law enforcement reports the incident to the NC Center for Missing Persons, which is the only agency that can activate an AMBER or Silver Alert and will do so ONLY at the request of an investigating law enforcement agency.

To view both AMBER and Silver alerts, visit www.nccrimecontrol.org web site.

Rockslide Work Continues

rockslide1009October 30, 2009 - RALEIGH - Work is continuing on the removal of debris from last week’s rock slide on I-40 in the North Carolina mountains. Governor Perdue signed an emergency declaration last week which is the 1st step enabling the North Carolina Department of Transportation to request funding assistance from the Federal highway Administration. Perdue said, “the cleanup process is underway, and it will be a 24/7 operation.” The rockslide occurred Sunday around 2 a.m. blocking both lanes of Interstate 40 approximately three miles from the Tennessee border. Five vehicles, including one tractor-trailer, were hit by falling debris. Two people sustained non-life threatening injuries and were treated at the local hospital. The slide is about 150 feet high and 200 to 300 feet wide; the majority of the debris is rock and large boulders, some the size of a garage or small house. Initial damage assessments from state transportation officials estimate the clean up and repair will cost $7 million to $9 million and take at least three months to complete.
