G.K. Butterfield
August 17, 2010 - GOLDSBORO - Goldsboro’s Union Station is one step closer to being restored. Yesterday, First District Congressman G. K. Butterfield was in Goldsboro to make an announcement regarding the train station. $500,000 has been appropriated for use in renovating the station. Congressman Butterfield said, “The purpose of this appropriation is not only the restoration of this historic facility, but … to help with job creation and economic development in the City of Goldsboro.”
Built in 1909 at the west end of Walnut Street, the station provided passenger service to the Goldsboro area for the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad, the Southern Railway, and the Atlantic and North Carolina Railway. Service by various railways continued until 1968. The station was placed in the National Register of Historic places in 1977 but had been used in more recent years as a warehouse. The North Carolina Department of Transportation purchased the station in 2007 with the announcement it would renovate it for service. Rail service between Raleigh and Wilmington would route through Selma and Goldsboro. The station is slated to serve as a multimodal transportation center.
